Jose Besu, known as Don Polier, established his tobacco estate in Puerta de Golpe, Pinar del Rio, transforming arid scrubland into one of the region's most respected farms. His name became synonymous with fine tobacco, earned through relentless effort rather than chance.
Working from sunrise to sunset with little more than a mule and the support of his wife Regla, he completed his first harvest and curing entirely on his own. The exceptional quality of that tobacco marked the beginning of his success. Known for his integrity, character, and warm humor, Don Polier was also an innovator, pioneering nighttime fieldwork using handmade torches crafted from pine roots and palm fronds.
As his operations grew, he expanded his landholdings and workforce, personally overseeing the fields and maintaining close relationships with his workers and their families. His reputation for kindness was so well established that legend holds even bandits refused to harm him once they recognized who he was.
Today, his legacy lives on through family stories and a clock that once hung in his home, now preserved at the ABAM Cigars factory. This cigar honors Don Polier's life, perseverance, and lasting contribution to Cuban tobacco heritage.
